Factors affecting the strength of wear resistant ceramic products

Wear resistant ceramic linings can be widely used in impact and wear resistant protection for troughs, hoppers, etc. But there are many factors that affect the strength of ceramic products.

(1) The nature of the structural phase. Generally speaking, the high-temperature strength of ionic bonded wear-resistant ceramics is lower than that of covalent bonded ceramics. At high temperatures, the impurity glass phase of the green body will have greater plasticity and cause deformation, which will drastically reduce the strength. For polycrystalline ceramics, it largely determines High temperature properties at grain boundaries

(2) Grain size and shape. The smaller the grain diameter, the easier the movement of the particle, the higher the deformation speed, and the sharp drop in the high-temperature strength. The influence of the grain shape is still inconclusive. Generally speaking, the sintered body composed of grains with obvious anisotropy has high strength.

(3) Porosity and microcracks. The increase of porosity will inevitably lead to the reduction of high temperature strength. At high temperature, due to the passivation of cracks and other reasons, the sensitivity of ceramic materials (especially materials containing more glass phases) to cracks and micro-defects is reduced, which is mainly reflected in the impact on fracture toughness.
